Onboarding is important, the first 90 days are decisive!

But what exactly is ‘onboarding’ and how can it be organised so that new employees actually become successful?

Onboarding increases new employees’ productivity, increases employee satisfaction and increases retention. Also, onboarding reduces recruitment costs. Onboarding is an opportunity!

How does the best candidate become the best employee?

The arrival of a new employee is always exciting. Not only for the new employee, but also for the organisation. Everyone is eager to make it a success. A well-thought-out and organised welcome accelerates the success of new employees. It creates a connection with the organisation, puts newcomers in their strengths faster, making them perform better and stay longer. Who doesn’t want that?

Onboarding is more than introduction

Onboarding goes beyond a traditional introduction. In it, there is often a lot of room for the ‘written rules’ within an organisation. Communication within the traditional introduction is mostly one-way. The organisation gives a newcomer all information at once, such as procedures, regulations, organisational structure, expectations and practical matters.

Onboarding is two-way traffic

Onboarding is also about the unwritten rules within the organisation. How does communication take place? How are decisions made? How are risks dealt with? But also: what does the new employee need? What are the wishes and expectations? It is an exchange of information and coordination between new employee and organisation. In this way, new employee and organisation are quicker and better able to meet mutual expectations. So onboarding is two-way traffic.

Could your onboarding be more optimal?

In many organisations, onboarding is still in its infancy. We are happy to help make onboarding mature. We quickly and thoroughly map out your organisation’s current onboarding. Think for instance about pre-boarding, the level of connection of new employees and the way they learn and settle in. We ask for feedback from line managers and HRM, as well as recent newcomers. What do they think of their onboarding? Based on this, together we look at opportunities for improvement, make recommendations and implement new onboarding activities or programmes.

Onboarding Scan

One of the tools we use for this purpose is the Onboarding Scan. This scan measures the important pillars within your current onboarding and is used once to map managers’ perceptions. Based on the results, tailored advice is made.

Onboarding Monitor

If you need more depth than just a scan, choose the Onboarding Monitor. Employees and managers can fill in this online questionnaire several times during the onboarding period. Based on this monitor, we provide targeted recommendations to improve onboarding, during the important start-up period.

Results!

Onboarding:

  • Increases productivity of new employees.
  • Increases retention of new employees.
  • Increases employee satisfaction.
  • Reduces cost of recruitment.
